Here's What the Experts Say
According to Drs. John and Julie Gottman, here are 5 steps to you can take to help improve your marriage. For more on their research you check out https://www.gottman.com/
Step One:
Update your Love Maps. Do you know your partner’s greatest fear? Their
biggest dream for the future? Allocate “cognitive room” for your
relationship and for the world of your partner.
Step Two:
Share a 6-second kiss. Long enough to feel romantic, the 6-second kiss is
a temporary oasis within a busy day (ex: going to or from work) and
communicates your partner’s importance to you.
Step Three:
Re-discover your past. How did you first meet? Where did you go on your
first date? Looking back on your shared history will give you renewed
excitement about your future!
Step Four:
Create rituals of connection. It doesn’t have to be expensive! Decide to
eat breakfast together more often this year. Go on more dates. Cuddle up
and have a movie night once a month.
Step Five:
Nurture appreciation. Our research shows that happy couples maintain a
5:1 ratio of positivity to negativity. Making deposits
into your emotional bank account will come in handy later.
